How Smart Home Devices Work
Smart home devices connect to your wifi/hub and allow you to make changes within your home using an app, voice assist or schedule. It saves time and energy by allowing the consumer to make changes from one single app instead of using multiple ones and also being able to make changes remotely, for example, turning your heating on before getting home. This enables greater flexibility and convenience within the home and can also save on energy and your money in the long term.
Here are a few smart options available within the home:
Smart Lighting can use motion sensors so the lights are only turned on when movement is detected allowing you to save energy. Smart bulbs and switches can be controlled remotely so lights can be conveniently switched off from another room. You can even set โroutinesโ such as "Turn on the hallway light when I unlock the front door".
Smart Heating can be set to specific times to ensure the home is warm when users wake and then turned off again when users leave the home for the day, therefore saving energy but still allowing comfort. These can even be set to monitor outside temperatures so heating is not in use unnecessarily.
Smart Plugs allow you to control the power to any plugged-in device remotely and often monitor energy usage. They will automatically stop powering a device thatโs plugged in if it is fully charged for example, to save on energy.
Smart Home Appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators are often designed with energy efficiency in mind and can optimise their cycles to reduce water and energy consumption, even better, sometimes from an app. You can have your kettle boiled just as you walk through the door!
