Lamp ban: EU-Compliant LED Solutions

In the fight against climate change and dangerous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, mercury-containing and inefficient lamps may no longer be placed on the market throughout the EU from certain dates in 2023. Fluorescent lamps in particular are affected by the LAMP BAN. As a professional lighting partner and full-range supplier, LEDVANCE offers you convincing alternatives for switching to energy-efficient, future-proof LED technology and helps you find solutions with individual services.

THE SITUATION: LAMP BAN 2023

The EU Commission set out strict ecodesign requirements for light sources in its EU Ecodesign Regulation 2019/2020 (Single Lighting Regulation SLR). In spring 2022, it also revised the EU ROHS DIRECTIVE 2011/65/EU and has further restricted the exceptions for mercury in light sources defined in Annex III. As a result of these legal measures, the following lamps may soon no longer be placed on the market throughout the EU:

  • Circular T5 fluorescent lamps from February 25, 2023

  • Compact fluorescent lamps with plug-in bases (CFLni) from February 25, 2023

  • Linear T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps from August 25, 2023

  • Halogen pins (G4, GY6.35, G9) from September 1, 2023

THE CHALLENGE: SWITCH TO LED

Efficient and versatile LED solutions are suitable climate-friendly, future-proof alternatives to fluorescent lamps that have reached the end of the road. However, because of different local conditions, converting existing lighting systems from fluorescent to LED technology is often a challenge. You will have to answer the following questions for each LEDification project:

  • Which drivers are installed: CCGs or ECGs?

  • Are there compatible LED tubes for existing ECGs?

  • Are all the installed drivers on site intact?

  • Does a dimmable system need to be converted to LED?

  • Does a DALI-controlled installation need to be converted to LED?
